Modelling a Village, Rwanda

Kids Workshop

In the research period in the build up to the ‘A House For A Victim’ project in Ntrama, Rwanda, we designed this workshop for the primary school kids of the Peace International School. The kids were challenged to design and build a model house – and then a whole model village – and to tell us what they thought was important in the design process with the goal of stimulating learning and inspiring them to be part of the design process in the future.

Working in teams of three to four, the children used local river clay, split bamboo sticks and recycled cardboard packaging to make their houses. We then co-created the landscape and brought the context together to organise and plan the village settlement on the playground floor. Prizes were awarded to all teams for their various unique endeavours.
