Willow Cottage, Greatham, Hampshire, UK

A ecological family home utilising a extensive sedum green roof in a vernacular ironstone extension within the South Downs National Park

Located within the South Down National Park, SAWA were presented with a beautiful semi detached cottage who’s owners desired to enhance their family home through the addition of a contextually sensitive, but domestically impactful two storey extension to the rear of the dwelling.

The cottage features a beautiful material palette of ironstone, red terracotta brick and grey slate tiles. The proposal adopts this selection to achieve continuity with the existing structure, while also welcoming the addition of a sedum green roof which compliments the surrounding natural landscape. The green roof not only brings a closer relationship to nature into the buildings design, but primarily provides a passive solution to the environmental strategy for the proposal through high thermal mass and excellent insulative properties.

As well as meeting to the requirements of East Hampshire District Council and South Down National Park, SAWA worked closely with the end users to develop a cost effective, beautiful, and appropriate solution for their needs as a family.

With planning approved in October 2020, we broke ground and are on-site in November 2020.

The internal spaces have been enhanced and maximised to create better circulation, natural light and visual connection to the beautiful scenery of the rear gardens.
